Can sex only be passionate if you respect each other?

Hey, Im a 17 year old boy, and the other day I was having this (serious) discussion with a friend a couple of years ago who has had sex (I haven't) and he said that, in his opinion, sex can only be passionate if you respect each other.
If you have had sex, Do you agree with this?
If so, why?
if not, why?

i agree that you need respect for it to be passionate, but you don't have to respect the person for it to be good
